This has been really fun to read. I feel like I’ve learned a lot and also feel more empowered even though I’m not seeking a cyber role. It definitely made me self-reflect and consider how certain things work at our company, and how I can advocate more for myself given the value I bring. I think any young professional or college student will gain a lot of valuable information and insights from this, even if they are not looking into cybersecurity for a job.

I especially liked the idea of focusing on all of the non-technical roles you can have within the industry. That was one of my favorite parts of the book and honestly I think one of the most important messages: there’s a misconception that in order to do a job, you have to work in that job’s industry.

You can work in an industry without being in a specialized role for that industry. Spencer discusses how you can be in sales or marketing or HR or Ops at a cybersecurity company. I was so glad to see the focus on the types of roles someone could play!

I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering going into cybersecurity. Spencer lays out very clearly everything someone needs to know about cybersecurity, hacking and key concepts about the cybersecurity industry that will really provide a baseline for a newcomer. I especially like the way the path to finding a job allows the readers to envision how their skillsets can apply to specific jobs whether on the business or technical side. Finally, any job seeker will gleen some valuable information from the tips on networking, finding opportunities, preparing for and nailing the job interview.
This is a must read for any person who is just getting into cybersecurity. Spencer provides easy to understand explanations about the principles of cybersecurity and hacking and plenty of information about what you need to know to feel confident on your job hunt. The “who is hacking whom” section helps put global hacking into context. His advice deciding whether you should pursue a business or technical role is especially good. He shows newcomers to the industry that there are plenty of roles for people who are not engineers ( sales, marketing, operations) and the sections on preparing for interviews are on point.
I appreciated the comparisons about working for a big company versus a small startup. We’ve all had dreams about working for a startup. Cobb puts you right there in it. The information about how to think about the risk profile ( early stage, first time ceo) of a startup was enlightening. I also appreciated the sections on how stock grants and equity compensation works.
